LEARNZ Kiwi online field trip starts

Wednesday, November 21, 2012 - 14:15

Description

In preparation for this field trip you will learn about New Zealand birds, the different species of kiwi, kiwi features, life cycle, diet, and the special significance of kiwi to Māori. You will learn about threats to kiwi, the BNZ Save the Kiwi programme and how you can help the kiwi. During the field trip you will visit a kiwi conservation project on the West Coast. You will meet dedicated people from DOC, local iwi and others who are involved in kiwi recovery and Operation Nest Egg. You will see the techniques they use including the egg-timer transmitter and the aerial sky ranger to track incubating kiwi eggs. You will meet Richter the Rowi, a young kiwi who hatched just after the September 2010 Canterbury earthquake. You will join the forest search for a kiwi and its chick, help assess its health and collect and analyse data about them. Join in the special ceremony as yearlings are released back into the wild. You will see Operation Nest Egg and predator control as vital tools for saving kiwi and you will be able to work out what you can do to make a difference in your part of New Zealand.
