LEARNZ Underground and Opencast Coal Mining online field trip starts
Wednesday, August 8, 2012 - 14:00
In preparation for this field trip you will learn about New Zealand's energy resources including coal. You will learn how coal is formed, how it can be found and where it is located in New Zealand. You will learn about underground and opencast mining, processing of coal and the rehabilitation of mine sites. You will find out about Underground Coal Gasification (UCG) an exciting new development that extracts energy without mining. During the field trip you will visit opencast and underground coal mines in the Waikato. You will explore the origin, extraction, distribution and use of this abundant non-renewable New Zealand resource. You will interview miners who work underground or who operate big machinery above ground and compare environmental issues related to underground and opencast mining. You will visit Huntly East, originally an opencast mine now one of the most advanced underground coal mines in the world. You will go underground and see innovative developments that have overcome the unique challenges to mining posed by New Zealand geologic conditions. You will visit the site of the new UCG pilot plant to find out how it produces synthetic gas and what this means for the future.
