Video Conferencing with the GCSN
The use of video conferencing technology is increasing exponentially in the education community both internationally and within New Zealand.
Integrating Video Conferencing into your school
Video conferencing is a great tool for the classroom and for professional development for educators. In order to ensure it is used effectively and without placing additional overheads on already strained resources it is important to ensure the following:
- Educators receive appropriate training in the use of the technology and assistance in planning and availability of resources.
- The equipment is properly configured and set up within the school’s network to ensure ease of use and a positive user experience.
The GCSN is currently planning a number of workshops which all members will be welcome to attend. These workshops will allow teachers to become comfortable with using the hardware, and cover some of the use cases for video conferencing. All participants will receive a certificate after completion of the workshop to indicate they know how to use the equipment at their school.
In addition, we have prepared some online tutorials, which can be accessed from the menu on the right.
Often when your video conferencing eqipment is having difficulty either making or receiving calls, your schools network configuration will be responsible. If you are about to receive video conferencing equipment, or are having difficulties, have the person resposible for your IT have a look at our Network Setup Recommendations for Video Conferencing
Video conferencing is simply a rich form of communication technology, allowing unprecedented levels of interaction with people all over the world. In schools it is being used to support projects, programmes and professional development for both teachers and students.
The GCSN have had a document prepared to give you some ideas about how video conferencing is being used to support these areas. We hope you find them inspiring!
Read through this pdf, or print it out to help you make the most of video conferencing in your schools.
- Three nations, three stories - shooting for the stars
On Wednesday 26th October 2011 the South Learning Centre hosted “3 nations, 3 stories: Shooting for the stars” a video conferencing event which is a wonderful example of how technology is enabling true collaboration for students and teachers beyond classrooms and borders. Working with Green Cross Australia and by using Polycom's communication solutions, Cashmere Primary students have shared their ideas about a greener future with these other cities which also experienced natural disasters.
As part of my Special projects role I organised this video conference which supports our school customers to give a more global dynamic to their learning programmes, linking with classrooms, teachers and experts all around the globe. Media picked up on this event and thus ChCh City Libraries’ Learning Centres was featured.
